The Silvertown Tunnel is a four-lane underground structure that runs under the River Thames in east London, connecting Silvertown and the Isle of Greenwich. The project received consent in 2018 and is currently underway with completion scheduled for 2025. The developers of the facility suggest that the population and traffic in this part of the city will increase in the future, so building the tunnel will provide a reliable passage for transport. In particular, the tunnel will reduce congestion by providing an alternative route, shortening travel times, providing employment opportunities and potentially benefiting the property market in the surrounding region.
Construction of the tunnel is considered an expensive undertaking and the cost is expected to be around $1.38 billion. This amount will be amortised through user charges that will also cover operation and maintenance works for the next 25 years.
